Existing somewhere between pensivity and nostalgia, Chicago group ten-speed weave a modernist folk lore that entirely their own. The music itself is raw and executed with tacit care while the lyrics are sung with such gusto that you may mistake singer Isaac Pierce for being in your immediate presence instead a few megabytes on your iPod. Their methodology is entirely D.I.Y.: from the xeroxed liner notes of cropped copper plates with tagboard and masking tape to manning the tape decks and mixing the album themselves. Like a thick fog rolling in at dawn, the music of ten-speed is an immersive and wonderful experience.
